Ever wished you could download online videos from your iOS device? With Tube Downloader, this $1.99-App, you can browse videos from major video sites and download them on the fly. Despite its name, this app offers no support for YouTube, since downloading videos is against the site’s terms of service, but it works fine with other video sites such as Vimeo or MetaCafe.
This app works essentially like a mini-browser, with several additional features. From the toolbar along the bottom, you can access your bookmarks, additional settings and view the progress of current downloads. If you don’t know where to start, tap the bookmark button to view some built-in bookmarks that will help you find videos. Of course, you can edit the list as much as you wish.
Once you access the desired site, you’ll be able to browse it just as you would on the Safari browser. Since there doesn’t seem to be a search feature built-in, you’ll have to perform searches from the video site itself, which doesn’t provide the best user experience in the world but it does the job.
Once you’ve found the video you wanted, just access it like you normally would. If everything goes as expected, you should get a prompt asking you whether you want to download the video or just view it within the browser (although, of course, if the stream uses Flash you’ll have to download it).
As the download progresses, you can keep browsing or even download more files, up to 10 at once. As we mentioned before, you can tap on the "Downloads" option to view a list of all the downloads currently in progress, as well as those recently finalized:
Of course, you can then view all your downloaded files by tapping "Files" on the toolbar, which you can organize by folders. Maybe more important, however, is the ability to export videos to your photo library, which you can then import onto your desktop.
There’s also an interesting bonus feature: if you wish, you can set a passcode to protect your videos, presumably to stop impressionable ones from accessing your "private stuff". It’s unclear if there’s any way to reset your passcode in case you’ve forgotten it, so I’d be careful while setting one:
You can download Tube Downloader from the iOS App Store today. It’s currently selling for $1.99 "for a limited time", so grab it while you can!
